Il signor Lecoq, un botanico francese assai noto, nel 1854 scriveva nelle ‹Études sur la géographie botanique›: «È chiaro che le nostre ricerche intese a stabilire se le specie siano variabili o invariabili ci conducono direttamente alle idee espresse da due uomini giustamente celebri, Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire e Goethe». Alcuni altri brani sparsi nella vasta opera di Lecoq fanno sorgere qualche dubbio sull’ampiezza delle sue idee relative alla modificazione delle specie.
