Gli ‹Héroïsmes superflus› di Barrès apparvero nella rivista «Taches d’Encre» nel febbraio 1885 e furono poi ripubblicati tre anni dopo all’interno di ‹Sous l’oeil des barbares›, Lemerre, Paris 1888. L’autore fu probabilmente influenzato dai due articoli che nel 1876 apparvero a firma di un amico di Renan (che pure si era interessato di Ipazia: vd. Renan, cit.), Henry Blaze de Bury. Vi si trova, secondo M. Davanture (‹La jeunesse de Maurice Barrès: 1862-1888›, H. Champion, Paris 1975) «le modèle d’Athénée dans les Héroïsmes superflus. Barrès a-t-il lu cet article?».
