Che la fonte che più disturba gli studiosi cattolici sia Socrate, «cristiano di simpatie novaziane», è immediatamente notato anche da Canfora, Cirillo e Ipazia, cit., p. [1]. Sulla posizione di Socrate Scolastico cfr. Dzielska, cit., p. 98: «From the context in which he speaks about the destructive feeling of jealousy of Hypatia’s “hearthly” honors, it follows that he has Cyril and his party in mind even though he does not name the patriarch»; pur pronunciandosi contro la diretta responsabilità di Cirillo, la studiosa ammette l’esistenza di «a cover-up campaign orchestrated to protect the perpetrators» (p. 100).
